Alyssa Schwartz is a Toronto-based writer who’s written for a variety of publications including the Globe and Mail, National Post and TheLoop.ca. She thanks her mom for nagging her to become a travel writer, as there is nothing else that allows her to appreciate both how enormous and small this planet of ours really is.

Coolest place you've ever visited and why: Colombia for its incredible diversity—big cities, mountainous coffee plantations, jungle, salsa music and beaches.

Must-pack item: A bathing suit, even if you don’t think you’ll need it. It takes up no room in your bag or carry-on.

Best travel advice: While it’s tempting to capture a digital record of every travel experience, sometimes it’s best to put away the iPhone, live the moment fully and walk away with the richest possible memory.
