Where to unplug for the ultimate escape

With digital devices never far from your fingertips, checking in with the office and keeping your social media network up to date can interrupt a much-needed vacation. For some serious digital downtime, activate your out-of-office, stash your electronics and head out to one of these off-the-grid spots.

Featherdown Farms, Born in the Borders, Scotland

Explore your very own enchanted garden at Born in the Borders’ Country House Hideout, located on a working farm in the Scottish countryside about an hour from Glasgow. Camp in style alongside the River Teviot with real beds, a private outdoor shower and a wood-fired hot tub. Collect fresh eggs for your morning feast and let the kids run free to discover a huge tree house, grass maze and mini animal safari. While there is cellphone coverage, there are no plugins, so once your device runs out of juice, you’ll have no option but to put down your screens and embrace the great outdoors before heading to the on-site plough-to-pint microbrewery for a tour and tasting. Rates from $820 (£429) for a four-night stay.

Assiniboine Lodge, Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park, B.C.

Built in 1928 and miles away from the nearest road, Assiniboine Lodge is accessible only by hiking, cross-country skiing (in the winter) or helicopter, and it is completely off the grid. Hit the trail for an eight-hour trek up to the lodge or to one of the five Naiset Huts, each equipped with its own wood-burning stove. Settle in for a picnic by an alpine lake and, later, gather for a little stargazing. Lodge rates from $300, Naiset Huts from $125.

Camp Grounded, Various U.S. locations

Surrender all your digital gadgets for a long weekend of unplugged fun with Camp Grounded. Offered in a number of locations, including California, Illinois and Texas, this summer camp for adults features a variety of activities, including archery, beatboxing, dancing and yoga. Tuck into locally sourced gourmet food and enjoy some status-free conversation—work talk and networking are also prohibited. Cabin accommodations are assigned by gender, and rates start from US$445 for four days.

Prana del Mar, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Situated north of Cabo San Lucas, the Prana del Mar relies on solar power, as there are no power or telephone lines for miles. Cellphone coverage is limited and, while Internet access is offered in the main building, guests are encouraged to disconnect and enjoy some face-to-face time. Activities include morning yoga practice, horseback riding, surfing and hammock-snoozing, all complemented by a fresh, largely organic menu. Package rates from US$1,700.
