Milestone Birthdays: Turning 50 in Costa Rica

Celebrate this milestone with an adventure

It’s time for the milestone trip you’ve always wanted, which is what makes Costa Rica a perfect choice. There’s just so much to check off here: the cloud forests, the lava fields, the gardens of Blue Morpho butterflies. The whole place just has this dreamy, Dr. Seuss appeal, and its diversity is remarkable: rain forest, jungle, lowlands, highlands and beautiful beach-lined coasts. Find a home base along the Pacific coast and then you can mix up beach time with not-soon-forgotten day trips.

What To Do

First off, there’s the lush coastline, snorkelling and infinity pools of your chosen home base. Besides the poolside Bali beds, many of the resorts offer diving, kayaking or even golf. And then there are day trips. Board a catamaran for a sunset tour or visit one of the country’s biodiversity-rich parks. Just remember, road travel is slow and some outings are 12-plus hours, so budget for some downtime days.

Where To Eat

Make reservations at your resort’s favourite restaurant, or mark the big day with a traditional Costa Rican meal on a field trip to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Sky-high suspension bridges are combined with lunch at a coffee plantation that includes samples of sugar cane and old-style hot chocolate. Who needs cake?

Where To Stay

Along the northern Pacific coast in the Guanacaste province, there’s a string of all-inclusive resorts including familiar names such as the Westin Golf Resort & Spa Playa Conchal, Hilton Papagayo Costa Rica Resort & Spa and the JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort & Spa. Expect white-sand beaches and holiday amenities both exotic and familiar, from lagoon-style pools to spas.
