The Sports Fan's Guide To Los Angeles

When and where to go in L.A.

In sports speak, the term “Showtime” generally refers to the Los Angeles Lakers of the 1980s, when the National Basketball Association’s games were Hollywood events (starring Magic Johnson).

Today, the Lakers remain L.A.’s main sports attraction—even though the team has recently hit a rough patch. With the glitz and glamour created by all the celebrities who continue to choose the Lakers over fellow NBAers the Los Angeles Clippers, basketball fans from far and wide still consider a trip to see the Lakers play at home high on their list of must-dos.

No matter what professional league team you choose to see in L.A., a large portion of the action takes place in downtown’s Staples Center/LA Live complex, where the beautiful people and regular Joes come together to cheer on their favourites.

Best time to go

Right after Christmas, so you can catch a break from the cold and see the Rose Bowl Game, which is the oldest college football bowl game in existence and is usually played on Jan. 1. The Lakers’, Clippers’ and Kings’ seasons are also in full swing at that time, so there’s something going on at the Staples Center virtually every night.

Second-best time to go

April, for sure. The NBA and NHL playoffs are starting and, more importantly, so is the Dodgers’ season.

Where to fuel up

Head to the Yard House at the LA Live complex. It offers a variety of beer choices and plenty of beautiful-people-watching opportunities.

Where to stay

The historic Los Angeles Athletic Club is a safe 10-block walk from Staples Center. There are nice restaurants in the vicinity and a great spa and gym on site. The hotel is more than 100 years old, but the rooms were renovated in 2009.

Teams to see

L.A. is home to the NBA’s Lakers and Clippers, the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Kings and Anaheim Ducks, MLB’s Dodgers and the Angels of Anaheim and Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Galaxy and Chivas USA.

Getting There: WestJet flies to Los Angeles 40 times a week from Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton.
